|Author||Demetrios E. Tonias|
This great little book is basically a study on how John Chrysostom saw the Biblical patriarch Abraham. The author investigates all the varied works of John Chrysostom including his Homilies on Genesis. John Chrysostom used Abraham as an exemplar for all sorts of virtues and behaviours and basically Christianised him for his audience. As an added bonus Tonis includes a translation of a homily by John Chrysostom called 'On Abraham'. Doubts had been expressed about the authenticity of the work in the past but Tonis spends part of his book proving its genuiness. Once I discovered that this book contained a translation of a neglected work of John Chrysostom I knew I had to make it mine! The translation itself is in a nice, vivid English style that is edifying to read.
