Book Description:

Any one even mildly interested in Early America will find this text quite entertaining and informative. Eliza Leslie was one of the most prolific and popular women writers of her era (1787-1858); this text (finally!!!) presents a reasonable sampling of her amazing work. Although having the scholarly apparatus that scholars will find incredibly useful, Leslie's work and voice is not bogged down and shines through with power, poise, and precision. For example, the fiction is timeless and easily transfers to today's world. Likewise, the excerpt from Miss Leslie's Behavior Book on letter writing should be required reading in today's twittered, tweeted, and horribly-written and emailed world. And there are also delightful little nuggets of American recipes, such as "Spunge Cake" that calls for "ten ounces of sifted flour, dried near the fire". Dried near the fire! Love it!
I look forward to more of Leslie's work finding its way into print (most especially, _Alina Derlay or The Two Caps_, my personal favorite), but this is a fine, fine beginning!
